From now on, 16 young people between the ages of 12 and 18 can receive psychiatric treatment in Timanti, a new pavilion of the AZ Alma in Eeklo. Timanti is the Finnish word for diamond, and according to the hospital is the perfect name, "because there is a diamond in everyone. But sometimes we lose contact with that diamond. With Timanti we want to help the young people to find that inner diamond again ", says Fritz Defloor, operational director of AZ Alma.

The day care for young people in AZ Alma has been around since 2019, but it was first housed in the hospital itself. The operation was spread over several places. "That was not ideal, but it had to be because of the corona crisis," says the director. "They have been staying in Timanti since January, but - again due to corona - we could not do the official opening earlier than today."
Sensitive region
The young people only come to Timanti during the day, from Monday to Friday. "We then work with them therapeutically for 12 weeks, in a strictly structured setting that they have often had to miss," says Timanti coordinator Griet Plettinx.

"In addition to therapeutic conversations, there is also room for fun things, such as music, games or being creative. In this way we can also get to know the talents and strengths of the young people and give them compliments, which they often weren't used to. is an operation that is very welcome in Meetjesland, because here too there are children and young people who, for example, have been staying home from school for a while due to problems. They or their parents can call us to ask for help, or a doctor or the CLB can refer them to Timanti."
Anyone who knocks on the door today will not be able to get help until September or October at the earliest.
